SS Braided PTFE Lined Flex Hose

SS braided PTFE-lined flexible hoses consist of a PTFE inner tube for chemical and temperature resistance and a stainless steel outer braid for strength and pressure resistance. They are highly durable and used across various demanding industries, including automotive, chemical processing, and food & beverage.

The process of manufacturing the bulk hose blank involves several industrial steps:

Extrusion of the PTFE Liner

Raw PTFE material is processed, typically through a ram extrusion or paste extrusion method, to create a continuous, seamless inner tube (the liner). This liner provides the chemical resistance and smooth inner surface of the hose.

01

Braiding Process

The PTFE inner core then moves to a high-speed braiding machine. Here, one or more layers of stainless steel wire are woven around the inner tube. This external braid provides the necessary strength to handle high pressure, resists abrasion, and dictates the hose's final diameter.

02

Sintering and Curing

The braided hose assembly is typically heated (sintered) in an oven at high temperatures to set the PTFE and create a fully bonded, polymerized shape, which ensures its structural integrity.

03

Testing and Quality Control

The manufactured bulk hose undergoes extensive quality checks, including dimensional verifications and pressure testing, before being released for final assembly.

04

The final stage involves cutting the bulk hose to specific lengths and attaching end fittings:

1

Cutting to Length: The bulk hose is first cut squarely to the required length. Masking tape is often wrapped around the cut point beforehand to prevent the stainless steel braid from fraying.

2

Preparing the End: The cut end of the hose is prepared by slightly separating the stainless steel braid from the PTFE inner tube, and trimming any loose wires or burrs from the bore.

3

Fitting Installation: The fitting assembly, which typically includes a socket and a nipple/insert, is then installed. ◦ The socket (or compression nut) is slipped over the end of the hose.

◦ A sleeve (or ferrule/olive) is inserted between the PTFE tube and the braid.

◦ The nipple of the fitting is then inserted into the PTFE bore, often with a slight twisting motion and lubrication to ease the process.

4

Tightening and Sealing: The socket and the fitting nipple are tightened together using wrenches. This action crushes the ferrule, creating a permanent, secure, and leak-proof seal between the fitting, the braid, and the PTFE liner.

5

Final Inspection and Testing: The complete hose assembly is thoroughly cleaned, inspected for proper fitting alignment and damage, and proof-tested (usually to twice its intended operating pressure) before use.

Features and Benefits

Chemical Resistance

The PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene, also known as Teflon) liner is chemically inert and highly compatible with a wide range of corrosive fluids, fuels, oils, and coolants, preventing material breakdown and fluid permeation.

Temperature Tolerance

These hoses can operate in a broad temperature range, typically from around -85°F to +500°F (-65°C to 260°C), making them suitable for high-temperature and low-temperature applications.

High Pressure Capability

The stainless steel outer braid provides excellent reinforcement, allowing the hoses to handle high operating and burst pressures, often up to 2000 PSI or more, depending on the specific product and size.

Durability and Longevity

The robust construction resists abrasion, corrosion, and aging, resulting in a long service life and reduced maintenance costs.

Flexibility

While less flexible than standard rubber hoses, they offer enough flexibility for many applications and are an excellent alternative where the properties of rubber are insufficient.

Hygienic Properties

Smooth bore PTFE is non-stick, non-porous, and easy to clean, making these hoses a preferred choice for sanitary and high-purity applications in the food, beverage, and pharmaceutical industries.
