PTFE High Temperature Heat Shrink Tubing
PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene) heat shrink tubing is a high-performance material designed for extreme environments, offering the highest temperature resistance and best chemical inertness of all heat shrinkable fluoropolymers.
PTFE heat shrink tubing requires high temperatures-typically
325°C to 340°C(617°F-644°F)-to initiate shrinkage, usually requiring a specialized heat gun or oven rather than a lighter. The process involves cutting the tubing slightly longer than needed (accounting for $\sim$6% longitudinal shrinkage), cleaning the component, applying uniform heat until the tube turns clear/reaches a gel state, and allowing it to cool.

PTFE Heat Shrink Procedure
Preparation: Select tubing with an appropriate shrink ratio and cut it to size, allowing for 5–10% length reduction. Clean the target component to ensure proper, tight adherence.
Application: Slide the PTFE tubing over the component.
Heating (Crucial Step): Use a high-temperature heat gun (>327°C)or industrial oven.
Technique: Apply heat evenly, rotating the component to prevent localized overheating.
Indicator: The PTFE will turn clear when it reaches its "gel state" (624°F),signaling it is ready to shrink.
Caution: Open flames are not recommended, and excessive heat will cause the material to scorch or melt.
Cooling: Allow the tubing to cool naturally, during which it will turn back from clear to its original, opaque color, forming a tight seal.
Inspection: Check for uniform shrinkage, no air bubbles, and no longitudinal splits (which can happen if over-heated or if restricted from shrinking).
Key Specifications
Operating Temperature
Typically rated for continuous use from -85°F to 500°F (-65°C to 260°C).
Shrink Temperature
Requires very high heat to recover, usually between 620°F and 650°F (327°C to 343°C).
Shrink Ratios
Most commonly available in 1.7:1 and 4:1 ratios.
Appearance
Generally clear or translucent when expanded; it becomes completely transparent during the "gel state" at high heat before cooling to its final size.
Core Benefits
Chemical Resistance
Virtually inert to almost all known chemicals and solvents, except for molten alkali metals and specific high-temperature gases.
01
Lowest Friction
Features the lowest coefficient of friction of any polymer, making it ideal for moving parts or protecting against abrasion.
02
Dielectric Strength
Provides superior electrical insulation, even in high-heat or high-voltage applications.
03
Flame Retardant
Inherently non-flammable with high flame ratings (UL94 V-0).
04
Application
Heating Equipment
A standard heat gun often lacks the power to shrink PTFE properly. Manufacturers recommend using a butane/propane torch, a controlled-temperature oven, or specialized infrared tools to ensure uniform shrinking.
Gel State
The material will turn completely clear at its recovery temperature (624°F). Once it reaches this state, heating should stop to avoid splitting or thermal degradation.
Longitudinal Shrinkage
Unlike standard polyolefin, PTFE can experience significant length changes during the shrinking process.
