Shrinkable 2:1 PTFE Sleeving
Shrinkable 2:1 PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene) sleeving is a high-performance heat-shrink tubing known for its extreme temperature resistance, chemical inertness, and low friction. The 2:1 ratio means the tubing will shrink to approximately half of its original expanded diameter when heated.
Shrinkable 2:1 PTFE (Teflon) sleeving requires high temperatures (325°C-340°C/617°F-644°F)to reach its gel state, turn clear, and shrink. Due to extreme heat requirements, a controlled heat gun (with appropriate nozzle) or oven is recommended over open flames to prevent uneven shrinking or burning.
Installation Procedure
Preparation
Measure and cut the PTFE tubing to size, allowing for roughly 2%-5%longitudinal shrinkage. Clean the surface of the component to be covered.
01
Positioning
Slide the PTFE sleeving over the component, ensuring it covers the required area.
02
Heating
Apply heat evenly, starting from one end and moving to the other to avoid trapping air, which can cause bubbles. The tubing will start to turn clear and shrink when it approaches 624°F.
03
Completion
Stop applying heat once the tube has fully shrunk (turned clear) and conforms to the shape.
04
Cooling
Allow the assembly to cool completely. The PTFE will return to its opaque, milky white color.
05
Key Considerations
Safety
Work in a well-ventilated area, as PTFE can emit fumes at high temperatures.
Prevent Splitting
To avoid longitudinal splitting, ensure the tubing does not need to recover more than its 2:1 ratio (i.e., the component diameter should not be significantly smaller than the fully shrunk diameter).
Handling
Wear heat-resistant gloves, as the required temperatures are high enough to cause serious burns.
Features
Temperature Range
Typically rated for continuous use between -85°F (-65°C) and 500°F (260°C).
Shrink Temperature
Requires a very high activation temperature, generally between 620°F (327°C) and 662°F (350°C).
Wall Thickness
Available in various types including Thin Wall (TW), Standard Wall (SW), and Light Wall (LW).
Core Properties
Low Friction
Features the lowest coefficient of friction of any polymer, making it ideal for moving parts or cable pulling.
Chemical Resistance
Highly resistant to aggressive chemicals, acids, alkalis, and oils.
Dielectric Strength
Offers superior electrical insulation for high-voltage environments.
Application & Usage
Common Industries: Aerospace, automotive, medical devices (catheters/guidewires), and chemical processing.
Shrinking Method: Due to the high heat required, a controlled temperature oven is the most reliable method to ensure even shrinkage. While high-powered heat guns can be used, they risk uneven shrinking or burning if not handled carefully.
Sizing Tip: When ordering 2:1 PTFE, many suppliers recommend ordering based on the size after shrinking (the recovered diameter) to ensure a tight fit.
